Happy to Be Nappy by bell hooks7/8/2023 The graceful design visually balances the spare text, lively portraits and geometric graphics-which harmoniously orbit the spreads. His series of watercolor and pastel portraits set off against a warm cappuccino backdrop conjures fingers and toes, features and squiggles of hair from simple sweeps of his brush, and evokes characters suffused with humanity and tenderness. Hooks's rhythmic blend of brevity and eloquence launches Raschka's trademark visual haiku. From boys soaring ("All bliss boy") to boys sulking ("All bad boy beast"-here Raschka conveys the mood with just the right-hand side of a furrowed brow, and two arms seemingly blocking readers from view), at play ("I be boy jumping") and at rest ("all think and dream time"), the words pinpoint boyhood's unflagging energy and exuberance, vulnerability ("Hug me close. This spare, poetic riff on young manhood plumbs the delights and contradictions of what it means to be a boy-particularly an African-American boy-in a brief handful of sentences and with a few well-placed pastel lines that imply motion and emotion. Set the stage with the bold opening sortie: "I be boy" appears on the left of the spread, paired with a deceptively simple layering of rectangles in blue line that pulsates on the page opposite, a thoughtful-looking fellow, all elbows and knees slightly bent, seems poised for action. This stunning volume celebrates all things boy.

Hell by Jet Mykles7/7/2023 Next up was At The Bride Hunt Ball by Olivia Parker. I’ll let you know when my review posts on The Book Binge. After finishing Kissing Midnight last week I wanted to jump right in and read more. Ok – what I read this week – some pretty good books!įirst up was the second book in the Fitz Clare Chronicles trilogy by Emma Holly, Breaking Midnight. After I get it (I had to order it online) I’ll take a picture and show you. It’s stinking adorable! Not huge but just big enough for what I need. I also bought a new bookcase to put in my office! My books were starting to take over and I finally decided on one. Slow and steady wins the race, right? Right? lol (Patience is a virtue, Tracy!) My diet’s going ok – I’ve lost 2 pounds so far. I know the only reviews I’ve been posting are for another site and that sucks. She’s like a big footed rabbit or a kangaroo! lol Don’t ask me how she wore her size 4 shoes to school for 3 days – she said they didn’t hurt but still! Crazy. Turns out her foot has grown 3 sizes in 2 months! She’s a ladies size 7 for crying out loud (yes, she’s only 11.5). While there my oldest decided to get her foot measured too – just for fun. I took the kids out to shop and had to buy a pair of shoes for my youngest – her foot has grown so she needed new tennis shoes. I can’t believe that the “summer” is over for my kids! Back in school and they seemed to like their teachers ok so that’s good. By Emma Holly, GA Aiken, Jaci Burton, Jet Mykles, Olivia Parker, Sarah Mayberry

Camryn garrett7/7/2023 She’s making real friends, making a name for herself as student director of Rent, and making a play for Miles, the guy who makes her melt every time he walks into a room. Simone Garcia-Hampton is starting over at a new school, and this time things will be different. Powerful and uplifting, Full Disclosure will speak to fans of Angie Thomas and Nicola Yoon. In a community that isn’t always understanding, an HIV-positive teen must navigate fear, disclosure, and radical self-acceptance when she falls in love–and lust–for the first time. The first book I got to read, obviously, was one with a medical aspect to it, because that’s what I’m most interested in: Full Disclosure by Camryn Garrett. I however immediately decided to download a few books off this list onto my phone. I am white and admittedly completely clueless about racism, certainly as it applies to Black people. Last week, I was drawn to Anne of In Residence’s Black Lives Matter booklist.

Ramadan Moon by Na'ima B. Robert7/7/2023 It also emphasises helping the community and your neighbours. The storyline focuses on interaction with their parents highlighting the importance of family to help understand Ramadan better. During Ramadan, they read the Qur’an, give charity, share food with neighbours, and try to fast. The two siblings, Omar and Hanna, are excited about the beginning of Ramadan. This is definitely one of my favourite books about Ramadan, partly because I love Omar Burgess’s illustrations, which really capture the excitement and joy Ramadan brings. Hassan and Aneesa Love Ramadan: Written by Yasmeen Rahim and illustrated by Omar Burgess It’s a very interactive book, the language is clear and simple for young ones to understand and the illustrations are very sweet, especially with the addition of Musa’s companion who is a cat. It is about a young Muslim boy called Musa who watches the sky through various windows eager to see the crescent moon to signify the beginning of Ramadan. It’s also one of the only Ramadan lift-the-flap board books that I have been able to find. This is the perfect book to introduce to toddlers. Musa and the Ramadan Moon: Written by Nurgis Ara Zeb and illustrated by Azra Momin
