The goldfinch book free online7/5/2023 ![]() ![]() All bird guide text and rangemaps adapted from Lives of North American Birds by Kenn Kaufman 1996. Combining unforgettably vivid characters and thrilling suspense, it is a beautiful, addictive triumph - a sweeping story of loss and obsession, of survival and self-invention, of the deepest mysteries of love, identity and fate. Credits: All illustrations David Allen Sibley. THE GOLDFINCH is a haunted odyssey through present-day America and a drama of enthralling power. He is alienated and in love - and his talisman, the painting, places him at the centre of a narrowing, ever more dangerous circle. As he grows up, Theo learns to glide between the drawing rooms of the rich and the dusty antiques store where he works. ![]() He is tormented by an unbearable longing for his mother, and down the years clings to the thing that most reminds him of her: a small, strangely captivating painting that ultimately draws him into the criminal underworld. Each cast member in the play of Theo’s life has a mixture of positive traits and flaws that make up a believable character. Alone and rudderless in New York, he is taken in by the family of a wealthy friend. The Goldfinch is an exemplary book filled with vivid imagery and superb character development. Aged thirteen, Theo Decker, son of a devoted mother and a reckless, largely absent father, survives an accident that otherwise tears his life apart. ![]()

Disgrace jm coetzee themes7/4/2023 ![]() ![]() The words apply as much to himself as to anyone. I’m amused by the fact that he, a professor of language, begins the affair that causes his public fall from grace by quoting Shakespeare’s first sonnet. He claims to have lost ‘the lyrical’ within himself, but it’s doubtful he ever had it. Then there’s the sharp intelligence with too little empathy or emotion to make it truly sing. So good you might be tempted to revel in it. It’s not outrageously blatant, but it’s none too subtle either. There’s no escaping what he wants you to see. The word disgrace is what struck me with nearly every page. A little distance was needed before I could consider it rationally again. At the moment I finished it, shouting “WHAT? What the hell kind of ending is THAT?” and wondering if I was going into shock, I’d have demanded stars back for ruining my life. At page ten I would have readily given it five stars the writing is superb. ![]() It affected me more than I thought it could, in ways I hadn’t imagined possible. Villains & Vodka by Alta Hensley7/4/2023 ![]() ![]() To address this issue, series creators must create a fantastic villain who can relieve the hero's burden by diverting attention away from them. Many of these heroes have the same persona though, which makes them boring and too similar to each other. Updated March 26, 2023, by Suzail Ahmad: With so many new anime titles being released every year, there's no shortage of anime heroes. However, there are a handful of villains that have withstood the test of time and are hailed as the very best to date. Nennius’ work influenced later, better known, histories and remained influential for centuries. It is one of the earliest histories of the British Isles. Never let me go7/4/2023 ![]() ![]() Never Let Me Go is a story that peels back its own layers to reveal a truly stunning and grotesque storyline. It’s horror for the heart and the mind and leaves audiences with deep dogmatic questions relating to their existence. While Never Let Me Go isn’t widely considered a part of the horror canon, its chilling premise, and existential dread imbues the reader with heartbreaking anxiety. Award-winning author Kazuo Ishiguro employs existentialist rhetoric in his landmark dystopian sci-fi novel Never Let Me Go in a chilling way that leaves the reader both intrigued and thoroughly horrified. Horror can be considered a hallmark of genres outside itself because there is often a fear of the unknown, violence, bloodshed, and difficult situations. Dystopian and science fiction media love to employ existentialism after all. ![]() It’s a concept of horror that can easily be worked into other genres as well to create an affecting blend of genres. Modern readers and audiences often misunderstand and eschew the sheer gravity and capacity for the terror that existential horror brings to the table. ![]()
